Battery Locomotives

Express Service has been manufacturing battery-electric shunting locomotives since 2005. Our ES locomotives are designed for industrial operations where reliability, high tractive effort, low operating costs and zero local exhaust emissions are essential.

Battery-electric traction is particularly effective in slow and repetitive shunting operations with frequent stops and extended periods of inactivity. Unlike a diesel locomotive, a battery locomotive consumes no energy while standing idle and requires no fuel storage, engine warm-up or complex diesel powertrain maintenance.

Our current range consists of two proven models: the compact ES1000 and our flagship heavy-duty battery locomotive, the ES3000.

ES3000

Heavy-duty battery shunting without compromise

The ES3000 is our most powerful and successful battery-electric locomotive. Developed for demanding industrial operations, it combines high tractive effort, a robust three-axle design and exceptionally low operating costs.
With an operating mass of up to 48 tonnes and starting tractive effort exceeding 150 kN, the ES3000 is designed to handle heavy train formations at low shunting speeds. Its nominal shunting capacity is up to 3,000 tonnes, depending on track conditions, gradient, curves and operational requirements.

The locomotive is particularly suitable for:

The ES3000 is built around a rigid welded steel frame designed for demanding industrial service. Synchronously controlled AC traction motors drive the wheelsets through high-ratio axle gearboxes, providing powerful and precisely controlled traction at low speeds.

Its programmable control system allows the locomotive’s acceleration, maximum speed and braking behaviour to be configured for the customer’s specific operation.

Energy efficiency in real working conditions

Industrial shunting often involves short movements, frequent stopping and long periods of idling. This duty cycle is ideally suited to battery-electric traction.

During deceleration, the ES3000 uses regenerative braking to recover part of the locomotive’s kinetic energy and return it to the battery. When stationary, it consumes virtually no traction energy. This makes the ES3000 especially efficient in repetitive loading, unloading and train-positioning operations.

Compared with a conventional diesel shunter, the ES3000 offers:

Ready for demanding operations

The ES3000 is equipped with an integrated battery charger, radio remote control and an onboard compressed-air system for operating the train’s pneumatic brake.

Depending on the customer’s requirements, the locomotive can also be configured with:

Every ES3000 is configured according to the customer’s infrastructure, train masses, gradients, operating cycle and coupling requirements.

ES1000

Compact battery power for lighter shunting duties

The ES1000 is a compact battery-electric locomotive designed for depots, workshops and industrial sites where space is limited and train formations are lighter.

With a nominal shunting capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes, the ES1000 provides the same fundamental advantages as the ES3000: zero local exhaust emissions, low noise, radio remote control, precise low-speed operation and low maintenance requirements.

Its compact dimensions make it particularly suitable for:

  • locomotive and wagon depots;
  • railway workshops;
  • indoor tracks and production halls;
  • loading and unloading installations;
  • train positioning and weighing;
  • light and medium industrial shunting.

The ES1000 is the practical choice where the full traction capacity and operating mass of the ES3000 are not required.

Built for your operation

No two industrial railway operations are identical. Before proposing a locomotive, our engineering team analyses the customer’s train masses, gradients, track layout, required speed, daily operating cycle and charging opportunities.

This allows us to configure the ES1000 or ES3000 for the actual task—not merely offer a standard vehicle.

For demanding industrial shunting, the ES3000 delivers the traction of a conventional locomotive with the efficiency, cleanliness and control of a modern battery-electric drive.

Express Service is currently developing two high-voltage battery-electric shunting locomotives with greater power. The new prototypes are based on our successful MDD4 and MDD5 diesel locomotive models and are intended to extend the capabilities of battery-powered shunting to more demanding applications.

The new high-voltage battery locomotives will be capable of operating at higher speeds and will feature larger, more comfortable cabins. They are being developed for TSI certification. Express Service is currently looking for partners and investors for these prototype models. The future series of powerful battery-electric locomotives has significant potential, being based on the successful MDD5 platform.
